Greetings and welcome back ! I see you came back for more hehe..

  For this week, I'm going to cover Evolution of CALL and also Search Engines. So get some snacks and here we go

1. Evolution of CALL

Now, there are 3 levels of progression in CALL. First off, behaviouristic CALL, communicative CALL and lastly integrated CALL. 

Now for behaviouristic CALL, it goes back in the 1960's. Because of its programmed instruction, it was repetitively drilling students but only testing them using audio-lingual method. Students simply just listen and write their answer. 

Next is communicative CALL. This was developed in the 1970's-1980's. It doesn't focus on grammar but simply the usage of the language itself. Grammar became implicit.  

Lastly is integrated CALL or as I would like to call it the Age of the CD-ROM's

A little throwback story, back when I was a practicum teacher, I had also thought IT class and children these days have never even heard of diskettes. I realized how old I was  😭

Anyways, this was made popular was internet was became high speed and hypermedia was accessible. What is hypermedia you ask? Hypermedia is the extension of hypertext. Its a non-linear medium that can include sounds, videos etc and can be either interactive or non-interactive. 

Now, as I mentioned integrated CALL became popular when internet became high speed. This had a major role on English language and learners were no longer just recipients but they can also be the creators and communicators.

     2.  Search Engines

I'm going to make this short and sweet cause its a pretty simple thing. 

Search Engines = web tools eg - Google,Yahoo,Bing 

There are 4 parts

• Database - which is simply the storage of all the indexed webpages
• Web crawlers/Spiders - bot that 'crawls' collecting info that then stored in database
• User interface - the 'front desk' of the site where users enter their input and results are shown
• IRS (Info Retrieval System) - match user's query with right results and presented according to relevance
